The Phatory is pleased to announce “The Princess Series,” an exhibition of animations and prints by Roxanne Wolanczyk. The exhibition opens February 16 and runs through March 26. There will be an artist reception held at the gallery on Thursday, February 16, from 7-9:00 p.m.
As with pageant players who performed morality plays for the masses in the streets of medieval Europe, cartoons are a way for today’s artists to speak to, and about, the “everyman.” Roxanne Wolanczyk’s Flash animations metaphorically describe her perceived notions of herself in relation to the world at large, and her abilities to affect her terms of engagement. Speaking through the character of the Princess, Wolanczyk expresses the desire to live a privileged life, which is continually under assault by life’s exigencies. It is easy to identify with the Princess’ rails against the system and inevitable defeats. Wolanczyk’s narratives are humorous, clever and imaginative portrayal of the Princess’ inner world. Her exhibit at The Phatory offers viewers a chance to see a selection of newly minted animations and printed stills on canvas.
Born in 1971 and raised in New York City. Wolanczyk has been working on The Princess Series, www.PrettySite.com, since 2002. She began to work digitally in 2001, enthusiastically embracing the Internet for its wide accessibility. Throughout the 1990’s Wolanczyk exhibited her conceptual based artwork (www.wolanczyk.com) in such venues as: The Brooklyn Museum, The Bronx Museum, Pierogi, Cynthia Broan Gallery and Eyewash. She has been included in online exhibits based in England, Bulgaria, Argentina and the Netherlands. The Princess Series was made possible in part with help from The Experimental Television Center’s Finishing Funds.
